  • Manage the department’s physical resources, facilities and infrastructure to ensure the needs of the department are met.
  • Work with academics to allocate the departmental resources to requirements.
  • Organise the timetable of demonstrators and laboratories to meet the requirements of the teaching schedule.
  • Provide day to day management of the department’s technical support team including task delegation.
  • Ensure performance targets are met, including timeliness.
  • Oversee the specification for the development and maintenance of systems and infrastructure to support current and future departmental requirements.
  • Work with academics on the development of courses and units to ensure the infrastructure will support unit and course learning outcomes.
  • Where necessary, to provide technical input to the development and preparation of learning materials and provide input on the development of new courses and units for the future.
  • Work with the Head of the Department to develop budgetary plans for facilities and coordinating the purchasing of equipment for the department; this includes raising tenders, and ensuring that university regulations are met regarding purchases.
  • Identify new and emerging hardware, software and communication technologies, products, methods and techniques and the assessment of their relevance and potential value to the department, and to promote emerging technology awareness among departmental staff.
  • Help with the departments lecturing by delivery of single guest lectures, short series of lectures, delivery of short courses and possibly delivery of a complete unit, under the guidance of an academic member of staff.
  • To work with ISD and other departments of the university to ensure the requirements of the department are met and that the department follows common work practices and central university procedures and policies, and to develop best working practices and procedures for the University as a whole

Key Achievements

  • Development of postgraduate and undergraduate courses in computer security and forensics including a joint pathway with 7Safe, a leading computer security & forensics company.
  • Recognised within the university as an expert on IT, a member of tender board panels for university wide infrastructure projects and part of the university’s incident response team.
  • Successfully project managed several large facilities programmes including the development and commissioning of a £1,500,000 suite of engineering and teaching Labs.
  • Growth of the department’s computer labs from 5 labs with 140 PC’s to 19 labs, with over 500 PCs and a number of dedicated departmental servers including a 9TB NAS system and a HPC and grid facility.
  • The development of a state of the art infrastructure for the teaching of computer science and technology including latest developments in AV and electronic signage.
  • ‘Best practices’ expert for capital project bidding process within the faculty.
